Why Simply Trying to 'Be' More Confident Never Works

Confidence is something most of us spend our whole lives chasing. The advice we hear so often leaves us intimidated.

We’re often told:

“Just start doing it.”

“Get out of your comfort zone.”

“The more you do it, the more confident you'll become.”

Which often leaves us feeling intimidated and disempowered.

If confidence was that simple, I’m sure we’d have chosen those options already.

Instead, trying to force confidence can feel exhausting, uncomfortable and unsustainable.

Even worse, it can lead us to self-criticism.

The Missing Piece of the Confidence Puzzle

We’ve often been taught to think of confidence as confident behaviour but your behaviours don't exist in isolation.

Emotions fuel all of your behaviours, so in many ways, your behaviour is simply the outward expression of what's happening emotionally.

If your brain is generating self-doubt, uncertainty, fear or overwhelm, behaving confidently can feel understandably difficult.

You might manage it through determination and willpower. But even if you did, it would be exhausting, unnatural and rarely sustainable.

For Behavioural Confidence, Start with Emotional Confidence

This is the distinction I wish more people understood. If you’re wanting to make confident change in your life, please start with emotional confidence.

When emotional confidence is present, something remarkable happens:

The confident behaviours start taking care of themselves.

You no longer need to force yourself to have ‘that’ conversation or to overthink about whether you're capable.

You no longer need to fight your way through overwhelm or anxiety for each new opportunity.

Instead, confident behaviours start with emotional reassurance. Then such behaviour opportunities feel natural and most importantly - very possible.

Why Willpower Only Takes You So Far

Many high-functioning professionals become experts at pushing through.

They deliver the presentation despite the anxiety, say yes despite the self-doubt, keep going despite the worry.

From the outside, they’ll often look confident.

Internally however, they're carrying significant emotional fatigue.

Confidence becomes something they're performing rather than something they're emotionally experiencing.

What Emotional Confidence Looks Like

One of the best examples of emotional confidence in action from my own life related to starting my business.

I knew that my own emotional transformation had changed my life in unbelievable ways.

I knew the principles of Emotional Empowerment could help other people experience an incredible quality of life too.

But I didn't have ANY business knowledge. I didn't have entrepreneurial experience. Quite simply, I didn’t have a clue 😂.

And perhaps most challenging of all, most people had understandably never even heard of Emotional Empowerment.

The opportunities for low confidence were everywhere but instead, emotional confidence helped me feel calm, reassured and safe to develop and learn.

Another example was when I was invited to deliver a national webinar for the Network of Women in Banking and Finance, supported by a corporate sponsor.

Over 120 people attended and the previous speakers had been two nationally recognised BBC presenters.

Until this point, all of my speaking experience had been face-to-face. I had no webinar experience at all.

It could've been a wonderful opportunity to feel intimidated and blocked by self-doubt and anxiety.

Yet emotional confidence allowed me to:

✅ Email the network to let them know how I could help.

✅ Say yes to the meeting with the Chair and Secretary.

✅ Provide an overview of the value I could offer.

✅ Engage with the corporate sponsor.

✅ Show up and deliver.

✅ Receive wonderful feedback and allow myself to enjoy the pride of that.

Every one of those moments involved confident behaviour but none were fuelled by force, pressure or exhausting willpower.

Emotional confidence honestly makes so much possible!

The Changes I See Every Week

Last week, my clients were developing emotional confidence to:

✅ Stop people pleasing

✅ Start difficult conversations with colleagues

✅ Change disrespectful dynamics with their children

✅ Create sustainable boundaries around working hours

✅ Stop holding themselves back from exciting opportunities

What I love most is that these changes aren't being driven by pressure or self-criticism.

Their brains are learning how to generate greater calm, reassurance and comfort.

The behaviours then naturally follow.

And…alongside every behavioural change comes something even more exciting…

A new pride, self-respect and trust in their own emotional mastery.

Please spread the word!

I wish more people knew there’s a much easier, more reassuring and empowering route to confident behaviour.

You don’t need to become someone different or spend your life staying stuck and disempowered.

Instead, you can develop the emotional confidence that naturally supports the behaviours you're seeking.

Because when your brain delivers calm, reassurance and security, confident behaviours begin to feel natural and automatic.

You are every bit as worthy and amazing as anyone else.

You don't need to ‘be more’.

Just get emotional confidence on your side for when you want to use it to your benefit.

Your Empowering Step for This Week

Curiosity and conscious awareness are always the first step to any brain change.

Take a few quiet moments to reflect on these questions…

Where could emotional confidence take you?

Where do you see self-doubt holding you back?

What would you do differently if you felt really confident?

What opportunities, conversations or decisions might become possible?

What's Possible...

Please know that if you're tired of relying on willpower and pushing yourself through life, there’s another way.

You can train your brain to generate calm, reassurance and emotional comfort.

Emotional confidence.

When that happens, the behaviours you've been striving for often stop feeling intimidating altogether.
