Stopping work following you into YOU time…

Work has a way of following us. It can follow us:

  • Into our evenings

  • Into our sleep

  • Into family time

  • Into so many moments when you’re attempting to recharge or enjoy time with family and friends.

Sometimes it’s the workload that follows us, but overwhelmingly, its the emotional impact of work that affects our quality of life.

The Emotional Reality of “Work Following You”

You might recognise some of these moments:

You finish work, but your brain stays on high alert, replaying conversations, decisions or interactions.

  • You’re trying to relax, but your thoughts keeps predicting future worries or imagining what others might think.

  • You’re with family, but part of you is still mentally “at work,” unable to switch off.

  • You’re exhausted, yet your brain keeps offering thoughts that feel critical, pressured or urgent.

Please know this isn’t a weakness, a failing in you or a lack of resilience.

It’s simply the normal consequence of trying to get through pressured days, without your brain yet knowing how to best support you emotionally.

Why Your Brain Keeps You Emotionally ‘At Work’

When your emotions build up during the working day and go unprocessed, there’re lots of emotionally relevant thoughts that combine to create:

  • Rumination

  • Overthinking

  • Difficulty switching off

These thoughts continue to whizz around your consciousness, the relevant emotions keeping you on high alert.

These thoughts continue to whizz around your consciousness, the relevant emotions keeping you on high alert.

Fortunately, with simple steps, you can learn skills that process this thinking effectively, allowing your brain to calm.

You can also teach your brain to remove the worry and frustration it produces at source, so you have less challenging emotions to process in the first place.

Emotional empowerment protects your evenings, your sleep and mental peace.

The Transformational Shift to Calm and Confidence

When you train your brain to generate calm and confidence, something wonderful happens:

  • Your brain stops trying to stay on high alert after work.

  • It stops predicting future fears.

  • It stops replaying worries from your day.

  • It stops berating you for possible mistakes or other people’s opinions.

One of my clients recently used the analogy of experiencing a new, invisible moat of emotional protection around his down time.

When you’re emotionally empowered, work can’t follow you over the moat.

Why Emotional Empowerment’s Essential for High‑Functioning Professionals

High‑functioning people like yourself cope, deliver, achieve and support others.

Internally, as a result, your brain’s working overtime, the heightened emotional load following you everywhere.

This simply doesn’t change until you intervene, leaving most people experiencing their entire career alongside emotional exhaustion.

When you teach your brain to:

  • Process challenging emotions

  • Minimise emotional frustration

  • Generate calm and confidence reliably

Work stops emotionally ‘following you’ into your personal time.

Something you SO deserve!

Your Empowering Step for This Week

Start exploring these questions when work’s followed you into your ‘Down time’.

Q. What feels worrying about today, tomorrow or soon?

Q. What’s been really frustrating today?

Q. What felt emotionally difficult today?

Q. What do I keep thinking about?

Write your thoughts freely onto paper, giving your brain the chance to process it’s thinking in a way that’s emotionally prioritised.

When we externalise thinking like this, it’s great for helping relevant emotions process and pass.

Then I would suggest a thought option from below for reassurance.

As you practice this daily, you’ll support your brain to produce helpful calm:

“It’s understandable today’s been emotionally difficult but I can support myself as this processes and passes.”

“Work today involved challenges and difficulties but I am also safe.”

What’s Possible…

Please know, that if you want the delight of…

  • Evenings that feel restful

  • Sleep that feels uninterrupted

  • Family time for which you’re present

You can train your brain to provide this.
