How many hours d’you lose to emotional frustration?
We lose far more of our life to emotional frustration than we realise.
Not the frustration directed at other people (yes, there is that too!), but the frustration quietly directed at ourselves.
The frustration of knowing, logically, that we could be feeling differently… more confident, more secure, calmer… yet our emotional reality simply doesn’t match.
This contrast is everywhere.
The Frustration of “I Should Feel Differently”
You might recognise some of these everyday moments:
You’re delivering brilliantly at work, yet inside feel insecure, unsure, or disconnected in reality.
You’re managing family life with competence, yet emotionally feel lost or overwhelmed.
You’re navigating pressure with capability, yet you feel you’re only just coping emotionally.
You’re achieving, performing, supporting others, yet you feel emotionally stuck in ways you can’t explain.
This frustration is understandable and normal.
Yet, frustration can bring disadvantages, not least the physical drain.
You need to maintain your energy reserves so consciously given all you’re trying to navigate.
When you’re already juggling work, family, responsibilities and expectations, emotional frustration quietly drains your everyday quality of life.
Why Your Brain Creates Frustration
Frustration is a brain process.
At its root, frustration is constructed when your brain:
Imagines how a situation could be different, and
Associates that difference with emotional benefit.
For example:
“If I felt confident, this meeting would be easier.”
“If I felt secure, this conversation wouldn’t be so worrying.”
“If I felt reassured, I wouldn’t be so overwhelmed.”
“If I felt ‘good enough’, I wouldn’t be trying to please everyone.”
Your brain can see the emotional version of yourself that would make life easier, but it hasn’t yet been trained to produce those emotions reliably.
YET!
That’s why frustration becomes one of the most common emotional challenges for high‑functioning people.
Not because you’re failing, you lack worth or intelligence.
It’s just because your brain hasn’t yet learned how to generate the emotional experience you crave.
YET.
The Hidden Source of Frustration: Socialisation
To start transforming your emotional frustration, let’s explore the emotional socialisation you’ve experienced until now.
Socialisation refers to the thoughts your brain absorbed from society, often without your awareness and certainly without your permission.
Whether you’re male or female, you’ve been socialised in emotional repression.
If you were socialised as a woman:
You were often taught to repress your emotions in order to meet the emotional needs of those around you.
Your brain learned to prioritise others’ feelings over your own. Frustrating!
If you were socialised as a man:
You were often taught to repress emotions as a sign of strength, capability, or resilience.
Your brain likely learned that emotional engagement was weak or unnecessary.
Both forms of socialisation directly shape your emotional experience today.
No wonder we’re emotionally frustrated!
Our brains have been trained, without our awareness or permission, to keep us emotionally repressed, disengaged, and therefore paralysed.
The Empowering Truth
Luckily, you can completely retrain your emotional socialisation.
Remember, it’s your brain. Not society’s.
You get to decide whether you want to retrain your brain to emotionally support you, instead of allowing it to emotionally suppress you.
When you retrain your brain to produce the emotions you seek, your frustration fades dramatically.
You’re no longer wishing things were different.
You’re experiencing emotional satisfaction, contentment and reassurance…the emotional advantages you deserve.
An Empowering Step for This Week: Reflect on Your Socialisation
Take a moment this week to reflect gently on these questions:
What emotional messages did you absorb growing up?
What expectations shape your emotional engagement?
What emotional ideas does your brain offer automatically?
What has your brain learned to emotionally prioritise and what has it learned to emotionally repress?
This reflection isn’t so you can judge and berate yourself.
It’s just a chance for empowering awareness…the first step to any emotional change.
Once you see the socialisation clearly, you can choose to engage with this differently if you want to.
You can choose emotional empowerment instead of emotional frustration.
You can choose to retrain your brain to work for you, not against you.
Transforming your frustration dramatically…
