The Money You Save Through Emotional Empowerment
When people think about Emotional Empowerment, they often think about confidence, resilience, calm or stress reduction.
Those are certainly several of the wonderful benefits emotional empowerment can bring.
But emotional empowerment can also bring wonderful benefits beyond the obvious.
A good example of this is how much money you can save once your brain is generating emotions that fuel your confidence, calm, reassurance and worth.
This is because your emotions fuel all of your behaviours, and spending money is a behaviour.
When we understand and have the ability to influence the emotional drivers behind our behaviours, something remarkable happens.
We become far more empowered with how, when and why we spend.
The Hidden Cost of Emotional Discomfort
Many of us have spent years unknowingly using money to try to solve emotional problems.
Not because we're irresponsible, just because we try to access emotional relief as best we can.
Feeling stressed?
A spa day for a sense of comfort.
Feeling low?
A treat can ‘provide’ a momentary lift.
Feeling insecure?
New clothes might ‘create’ reassurance.
Feeling left out?
Saying yes to expensive plans can ‘provide’ a sense of belonging.
The spending itself is a practical action, it’s the emotional reason behind it that is so empowering to consider.
With the world of consumerism constantly knocking your door down, you can spend years chasing emotional outcomes through external purchases.
Why People Pleasing Can Be So Expensive
One of the most common examples of disempowered spending is people pleasing.
Understandable, given that our brains are naturally sensitive to social rejection.
Thousands of years ago, being excluded from the group could threaten your survival.
As a result, our brains have become incredibly skilled at avoiding disappointment, conflict, judgement and disapproval.
That can show up in all sorts of ways:
✅ Saying yes when we'd rather say no.
✅ Paying for things we don't really want.
✅ Taking on costs to keep others happy.
✅ Spending money to avoid uncomfortable conversations.
It’s so understandable and I’ve certainly done it so many times in the past!
But when your brain learns to produce emotional reassurance independently, rather than from everyone's approval, those decisions suddenly become much easier to navigate.
You no longer need to buy acceptance or purchase belonging. Very empowering.
Chloe's Missing Coat
A perfect example of this happened in our house this week. My daughter Chloe lost her coat.
She was understandably upset and frustrated that we weren't immediately replacing it.
The quickest route to relief would have been simple.
Buy another coat, problem solved. At least in the short-term.
It would've immediately reduced my discomfort - the challenging feelings I had to process in relation to her anger and our disconnect.
We can all relate to the emotional discomfort that naturally arises when someone we love is unhappy with us.
Years ago, I would have just brought the coat reactively, to ‘make’ the problem go away!
Not because it was the best decision but because it would've provided emotional relief.
Instead, emotional empowerment allowed me to do something very different.
I processed the feelings, allowed the discomfort to pass. Then I made a logical decision.
Not an emotional reaction.
The coat may still need replacing but she’s doing house jobs to earn the money before buying a replacement.
A completely different decision to buying a coat simply because my brain wanted relief from uncomfortable emotions.
The Clothes I No Longer Buy
For me personally, one of the biggest financial changes emotional empowerment has delivered relates to clothing.
For years I bought far more clothes than I truly needed. Looking back now, it wasn't really about fashion.
It was about confidence. Wanting to feel reassured.
However, the clothes were never creating those feelings. My brain was.
So as my emotional confidence developed, something unexpected happened.
I stopped needing purchases to enjoy self-worth.
I became comfortable in my appearance in a way I’d never known would be possible.
I became comfortable with who I am. Reassured in relation to other people having whatever opinions they had.
As a result, I now, naturally spend a lot less.
I no longer ‘need’ purchases to feel how I want to feel - I know how to enjoy the feelings I seek anyway. I’ve taught my brain to do this.
Even Holidays Feel Different
I still love holidays, but their role in my life has changed significantly.
Many people spend their lives counting down to the next break because they need an emotional escape from everyday life.
The holiday becomes the emotional solution. The relief and a time for happiness.
But when your day-to-day emotional quality of life improves, something beautiful happens.
You no longer need to escape your life through the expense of a holiday. A holiday just becomes a bonus.
The Freedom of Not Needing to "Be More"
Perhaps the most valuable financial benefit of all from emotional empowerment is the reduction in pressure.
The pressure to keep up, to demonstrate we've succeeded:
The bigger house.
The newer car.
The next upgrade.
Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you wanting any of those things.
What you choose to spend their money on is of course, entirely your own business.
Rather than right or wrong, this is about awareness.
Do you like your reasons?
Are they practical reasons? Or emotional ones?
The Real Source of Every Feeling
One of the most empowering things I have ever learned is this:
Nothing you buy can ‘give’ you a feeling. Your brain always creates your feelings.
Your house, holiday, clothes, car…they don’t ‘deliver’ feelings.
Your emotional experience of those circumstances depends on your brain generating emotions such as happiness, pride, excitement, contentment, reassurance or pride.
When you understand that, you get your financial power back because your emotional wellbeing is no longer reliant on your purchases.
When you teach your brain to deliver you the emotional good life, it changes the way you spend money forever.
Your Empowering Step for This Week
The next time you're considering a purchase, pause for a moment and ask:
What emotion is fuelling this decision?
Is it fear?
Insecurity?
Pressure?
Boredom?
A desire for approval?
A need for reassurance?
Or is it genuinely aligned with your values, priorities and goals?
Ask yourself:
Does this purchase serve me?
Do I like my reasons?
There are no wrong answers, just useful awareness.
Awareness is always where empowerment begins.
What's Possible...
One of the most unexpected benefits of emotional empowerment therefore isn't just feeling calmer, more confident or more secure.
It's freedom.
Freedom from needing to ‘buy’ confidence, approval or emotional escape.
Freedom from constantly chasing the next thing that promises to make you feel better.
