Nothing Changes Until Emotional Curiosity Switches On

Let’s consider something incredibly important:

Why do we often lack emotional curiosity…even though it’s the very thing that unlocks self‑support and empowerment?

This week reminded me of just how powerful curiosity is when it comes to inviting change.

I spent the Bank Holiday in Croyde with some of our best friends and their kids (that’s my Chloe in the centre).

It was a great chance for me to body board, which I’ve found is my absolute favourite outdoor fun (so long as I have a wetsuit!). I love it.

The kids meanwhile were loving sandcastles, crab‑spotting, wave jumping.

Between their laughter and occasional melt-downs, I also noticed something obvious:

When we’re young, our brains have a natural tendency to be curious.

“Why’s that crab hiding?”

“Why’s dry sand no good for sandcastles?”

We question everything.

We explore everything.

We seek further understanding and are really interested in possibility.

As adults, our brain tends to focus much more on saving mental energy. Eat, sleep, repeat.

Curiosity is unusual and it’s no different when it comes to how we typically feel.

Why Emotional Curiosity Fades

Before I discovered neuroscience, I didn’t realise my brain was automatically shutting down emotional curiosity.

I wasn’t paying attention to my everyday emotions.

I wasn’t asking questions.

I wasn’t exploring possibility.

I was just getting through.

At some point, without my awareness at the time, my brain had started believing thoughts like:

“I can’t influence my feelings. I’m stuck with them.”

“Calm and reassurance are for other people, not me.”

“This is just how it is. I just have to cope with whatever comes my way.”

These thoughts weren’t questions.

They were statements.

They sounded like facts.

And they quietly shut down any emotional curiosity I might have had.

They fuelled my daily cycle of:

head down → get through today’s stress and intensity → go again.

Now I’m very pleased to report that all of those thoughts were completely wrong!

Given our brain generates all our emotions, once we know how to influence this process to best effect, SO much is possible!

And the best bit…the world doesn’t even have to change for us to transform how we feel!

We hold all the opportunity.

Here’s the empowering science:

Your brain resists emotional curiosity because curiosity requires mental energy.

Your brain is already using 20% of your body’s energy just to get you through a normal day.

So when life is pressured with work, family and responsibility, your brain doesn’t prioritise emotional exploration.

It prioritises saving mental energy.

What is truly wonderful however, is that your brain is very teachable.

You can teach your brain to be emotionally curious once again.

And when you do, you give yourself the possibility of full emotional opportunity.

The Questions That Changed My Life

Once I started asking questions instead of accepting statements, I began giving myself emotional opportunity that didn’t exist before.

“What might be emotionally possible for me that I haven’t yet considered?

How can I experience emotions like confidence and worth, even if they’ve felt out of reach before?

What thoughts do I have that keep me emotionally stuck?”

These questions created emotional opportunity. They created possibility.

They were my first micro-steps towards unbelievable change.

Curiosity is the interruption your brain needs to do something different.

Three Reasons Emotional Curiosity Matters

Just like last week, here are three motivating reasons to keep going with your emotional growth:

  1. Curiosity interrupts emotional autopilot. It stops your brain repeating the same thoughts and opens the door to new emotional experiences.

  2. Curiosity creates emotional opportunity. When you ask what’s possible, your brain starts looking for answers and that’s where empowerment begins.

  3. Curiosity fuels emotional change. Every meaningful change starts with a question, not a statement.

Your gentle step forward for this week…

Take a few minutes to sit with the questions above.

Encouraging your brain to be emotionally curious is a critical skill.

Observe others this week with compassion, you’ll notice how often people report their emotions rather than consider how they could be different.

Instead, let’s do something different.

Let’s choose curiosity which provides incredible opportunities rarely considered!

Stress, intensity and pressure are the norm.

You are here because you want something different and you absolutely can access calm reassurance with the right steps.

You have amazing emotional potential.

BUT, only if you can consider possibility.

If you’re curious about what emotional change you’re capable of then that’s simply wonderful!
